Mealtime Maths
Posted on May 11, 2016
In the first week of May the Dragonflies began to go Mad About Maths! They started by considering 'What is Maths?' after a little thinking time they shared their ideas:
"it's number", "measuring" "dinosaurs....sorting", "my sister does maths".
We discovered lots of maths hidden in our daily routine, we start each day counting our Dragonfly friends, adding one more each time someone arrives and working out one less as children leave later in the day. At mealtimes we found ourselves counting alot! We sorted the cutlery into groups of knives, forks and spoons; we counted the plates; we divided the total number of children in half to work out how many would to sit at each table and finally we matched the chairs to the place settings. As we ate we realised how much mathematical language we use - some children asked for more, others estimated the amount of water they needed to pour and all of us felt full at the end of our yummy lunch!
