Sprouting Sums

This morning Leanne (modelling this seasons must-have Head Boppers) declared today was officially Sprout Day in the Dragonfly Room.  Several nets of this seasonal vegetable were introduced as a fun way to support the children's continuing interest in numbers and open up new possiblilites - it did this and more.  While adults often focus on numbers 1 to 20 children are more often fascinated by larger numbers, today it was 68 & beyond!  Towards the end of the afternoon one of the boys had moved onto estimating what eleventy-eight looked like, laying sprouts out in a variety of ways as he added more on.  He was so absorbed in this abstract number that his arrangement of sprouts has been left for him to continue tomorrow. 

As Sprout Day ended Leanne and I realised that sprouts are so versatile we could use them to cover all 7 areas of learning.  Now of course some will doubt this but we love a challenge so before Christmas we will be create a leaflet to show you how.
